Molweni, today is world mental health day,it is a day aimed at raising awareness and starting constructive conversations about mental health. The theme this year is young people and mental health in a changing world. I was saddened to read that half of mental health begins by age 14 and that suicide is the second leading cause of death amongst 15-29 year olds.

Definition of mental health

Simply defined it is the psychological, emotional and social wellbeing that affects how one thinks, feels and acts and determines how we handle stress, make choices and relate with others. It’s no different to physical health yet the latter does not have as much stigma attached to  it as the other.

Neurotic– Severe forms of ‘normal’ emotional experience i.e depression, anxiety or panic

Forgive me dear reader if today’s post reads like a doctor’s visit, its just that I believe some of the issues we are having with mental health is a lack of understanding and not enough knowledge this needs to change. We need get to a point where we are well informed and that we are ok with saying I am not ok, not  only when we are suffering from flu or some other physical ailment.

You are not alone

As most of you may know I suffer from clinical depression and anxiety and if there is one thing that I can say  is that those who are still going through the most you are not alone. Speak to a professional, friend or family member, I know its hard but it does get better. If someone chooses to confide in you please listen to understand because sometimes that’s all that is needed.
