Ginger fine dining restaurant ( review)

Hello there dear reader, how is June treating you? I need to apologise to my regular readers that the nine to five and the rest of responsibilities have kept me away from writing. I have not only missed writing but also engaging with you my dear readers. On the good news I am here with a post, one that I hope will be a treat to your eyes as much as it was treat to my taste buds.I was recently in Port Elizabeth for the annual EC blogger meet up and due to the fact that I live so far and use public transport I missed out on most of the event (cry with me). However trying not to dwell on the bad news I decided to tick off the other things I had on my to-do list.  Like the Kragga Kamma game park, walk with cheaters, which was cancelled for that weekend as the cheaters were on heat (again cry with me). Seriously a girl could get no break. Until I realised I could make it for lunch at Ginger.

Billed as a fine dining experience with a gorgeous view of the ocean I definitely knew I had to go. On arrival I was greeted by a friendly waiter who led me to my table. I chose to sit on the deck as it was a gorgeous sunny day without the signature wind of Port Elizabeth. Their menu had a variety on offer and I was informed that there was a new winter menu with wine pairing that was being finalized.

The lunch menu ranged from a mezze platter, fried Falafel, Pork Belly, Pasta, Hake and Mussels. I chose a roast vegan tian, which comprised of a medley of roast baby vegetables stacked between marinated brinjal topped with spicy tomato salsa, wild rocket and sweet potato chips. I paired my meal with a chilled bottle of Riesling.

Whilst waiting for my meal the restaurant offers some homemade fresh bread. It’s not often I choose a vegan meal but I wasn’t disappointed it was a feast for the eyes and my taste buds. The spicy tomato salsa and raw red onion just added another layer of flavour to an already  flavoursome meal. Who said a vegan meal is plain?

I had arrived just before 4pm when the kitchen closes for two hours to prepare for the dinner menu. However I was informed dessert is available whilst the kitchen is closed (smile with me now).  Again when in it came to choosing dessert it was a feast for sore eyes. The options range from cheesecake, chocolate fondant to lemon and blackberry eton mess.  I chose the crepe suzette which is flambéed at your table served with homemade vanilla pod ice cream. It was a decadent dessert whose sweetness was cut by the ice cream and it also paired great with my well-chosen bottle of Riesling.
In between my meals my amazing waiter Tonde and the manager Bongani filled me in on the history of Ginger. It is under the ownership of the Beach hotel, it opened in 1942 as the Bell. Then it was relaunched in 2000as Ginger with a focus on fine dining. They have cheese boards inspired by five countries. I had such a lovely time eating great food staring at the ocean that I was tempted to stay for dinner but alas I had other plans.
